Study 3: Prop 172 (1993)
California
Governor Pete Wilson called a statewide special election in November 1993
for the express purpose of passing Proposition 172, a one and one-half
billion dollar annual state sales tax devoted to firefighters and law enforcement.
He was supported in this effort by the Democratic Speaker of the
State Assembly Willie Brown.
Forde
and Mollrich were retained as lead consultants to manage this campaign and
bring together a bipartisan coalition in support of Proposition 172.
The
coalition organized by Forde and Mollrich included more than 100 state and
local organizations representing business, labor, teachers, seniors, law
enforcement, firefighters, ethnic communities and local governments.
Clint Eastwood was recruited for television commercials in favor of
Proposition 172.
Proposition
172 passed with a 58% YES vote.
